The Challenge

Dewberry is an Architect/Engineering/ Consulting firm based in Fairfax, Virginia with over 2,000 employees delivering $470M in services from 50 offices nationwide.

Dewberry's large infrastructure projects involve a broad range of stakeholders from the executive suite to onsite construction workers to the public. Collaboration on these projects can be challenging, presenting risks to successful project execution.

Dewberry envisioned development of a branded differentiating solution that would enable and enhance stakeholder collaboration on large projects and link clients to Dewberry services in the infrastructure, power, oil and gas, real estate, and land development sectors.

Solution and Outcome

Dewberry developed DimensionalView®, a web-based, mobile, and secure GIS portal supporting concurrent users, multiple user levels, and allowing client leadership and managers to view progress and change in real-time for one or multiple projects.

Mr. Feinberg managed a team to design, develop, test, deploy, and provide operational support for the DimensionalView® GIS portal.

With DimensionalView®, Dewberry had a branded, modern, cloud-based, mobile, and agile offering providing differentiating team collaboration and data access capabilities, improving project execution and communication with its clients.

Project Activities and Deliverables

  • Led design of the DimensionalView® solution including functional and non-functional requirements, UX/UI mock-ups, and detailed technical design, all meeting key business objectives.

  • Executed project development using agile Kanban methodology on the Trello platform.

  • Architected the DimensionalView® solution using a layered service-oriented architecture:

The server tier was architected using IaaS, deploying in an Amazon Web Services (AWS) Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) virtualized environment with failover and burst capacity for rapid scaling to new users.

The database tier was deployed using DBaaS; AWS Relational Database Service (RDS) virtualized SQL Server instances.

The application tier was developed using ArcGIS Server, Esri’s ArcGIS Online SaaS platform and its Web Appbuilder development framework.

  • Performed thorough testing and troubleshooting of the solution throughout the development and deployment phases.

  • Reported on project progress, schedule, and budget to Dewberry's CxO leadership and senior VP project sponsors.
